Waikato cyclists are gearing up for the eighth annual Winter Fun Rides. The series is now less than two months away.

Held over three weekends in August, the 2012 series, organised by Dynamo Events boasts new courses and extra challenges for competitors.

Starting in Matamata (August 12), Cambridge (August 19) and Hamilton (August 26), the rides are suitable for recreational cyclists and age group competitors.

Event Director Stephen Cox says the Winter Fun Rides is an event that anyone can do.

"Last year we had 200-300 competitors take part in each event which made for a great atmosphere - but we're hoping for a few more this year."

Riders can choose either 50km or 80km distances beginning in Matamata and Hamilton or 40km or 70kms distances in Cambridge.

This year the team at Dynamo has adjusted courses accordingly and believe riders will benefit.

"By organising three different locations over three consecutive weeks, it allows riders to choose one, two or all three events that suit their diary and budget," Cox says.

Cyclist Jo Bromley says the fun rides have helped her stay fit and focused over the winter.

"It's a fantastic goal to help get you off the couch and onto your bike during the colder months. To complete them, or even beat the clock from the previous year, has provided me with the motivation to stay fit and focused over the winter," she says.

Spot prizes are awarded across the board along with cash prizes for the first three in each of the long rides as well as for the first woman.

The series supports the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance. Dynamo Events will make a donation to the charity

Entry fees: $40 per ride; $100 for all three rides (early bird special expires July 22). More information and registration at www.dynamoevents.co.nz.
