One down and two to go is the call from first XV captain Ryubyn Vaipo as his team gets set to play in Saturday's Chiefs Cup final.

The Rotorua Boys' High School Year 13 student will lead his side against Hamilton Boys' High School in the Chiefs Cup final in Hamilton.

It's the first-five's 71st game for his side and the 18-year-old is looking forward to it.

"We set ourselves a couple of goals - just things we want to aspire to - and the boys have put their persona into it and shown their determination and grit to achieve those goals and we've achieved one of them by making the finals."

The two goals remaining for Vaipo's team are to win the Super Eight (top eight first XV team competition) and finish in the top four in the country.

Rotorua, a relatively inexperienced side take on a Hamilton side brimming with confidence after their 37-3 thrashing of Wesley College at the weekend.

However, Vaipo was confident he had the team to cause an upset.

"Probably the way we will beat them is defence and playing for the full 70 [minutes] ... and a bit of aggression and a bit of mongrel, really, just to upset their play."

First XV coach Gordon Hunt said the side had a relatively inexperienced pack but what they lacked in experience they more than made up for with heart and team spirit.

"Hamilton always have a good structure and one of their strengths is they always stick to it and very rarely go off task ... So if you can attack their structure you can potentially upset them.

"I'll be gunning for the team to attack their ruck and if we can get parity at scrum time and at lineout and get our own ball, I think we can put up a good challenge."

Hunt said the key in the forwards would be his experienced players, tighthead prop Rudy Mose and No8 Eru Wano.

"The forwards are a young unit - we only have two old hands back, Rudy and Eru, and I've been really impressed with the development they've made as leaders. But the forward pack have put a lot of time in and a lot of extra training ...

"It's true our strengths have been in our backline, if they understand that if our forwards aren't operating efficiently, it's a waste of time having Ferraris in the backline if you've got nothing up front."

One of those Ferraris is fullback Mason Walker who has just arrived back from a tour to France with the Bay of Plenty senior sevens side.

"It's been pretty difficult [getting back from Paris] I've had to get over jet-lag but [I] should be alright.

Walker said adjusting from seven-a-side to 15-a-side was an easy transition.

"It's probably more difficult adapting to the sevens game because I've been playing more 15s."

Coach Hunt said the 19-year-old fullback was a potent attacking force for his side.

"He's only slight, he's not the biggest kid but he will take it into contact and his speed normally is what breaks the tackle."

The match will be televised live at 2.45pm on Sky TV's rugby channel and is a real opportunity for his side to show their potential on a national level, Hunt said.

Taupo-nui-a-tia College have also qualified for the Chiefs Trophy final. They will play St Peter's College in Cambridge on Saturday at 12pm.

Taupo's coach Craig Katene said he was under no illusions about the magnitude of the task ahead for his team.

He said if his side could get enough quality ball for the backs anything could happen.
