Rugby: Chiefs make rugby history

In a pulsating final match, the Chiefs overwhelmed a gallant Brumbies side 27-22 at Waikato Stadium.

The Chiefs fought back from a 22-12 half-time deficit in a thrilling last 20 minutes witnessed by a vocal, sell-out Chiefs crowd - the same crowd which saw a nail-biting climax to the Chiefs' 20-19 semi-final win over the Crusaders a week earlier.

The Chiefs honoured fans by performing their impressive haka as a way of thanks.

It was an epic ending for co-captain Craig Clarke, Lelia Masaga, Richard Kahui, Brendon Leonard and Toby Smith who all leave the Chiefs family to continue rugby careers off shore.

Chiefs co-captain Liam Messam was named Man of the Match for the second year running.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie thanked everyone for the support received. "It has been outstanding."

Fans helped the Chiefs celebrate their second title at a parade through central Hamilton.

The parade down Hamilton's Victoria Street ran from noon, from Knox St to Garden Place, where the team was officially congratulated.

Each player was presented with a special civic medal by Mayor Julie Hardaker.
