A woman has been shot during a domestic dispute in Hamilton this morning.

Police were called to the Hamilton East address at 3.45am, said Hamilton Police Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall.

"Police were called to an incident where a woman has received moderate injuries as a result of a gunshot wound," he said.

"We take the unlawful possession of any firearm seriously.

"We are thankful that this incident did not result in much more serious injuries."

A 31-year-old man will appear in the Hamilton District Court this morning, charged with unlawful possession of a pistol and wounding.

Keall said the victim and the alleged offender are known to each other.

"We wish to remind members of the public that if you suspect family harm is occurring in a neighbour, friend or loved one's home, please ask the potential victims if they need help.
