A woman on a zero alcohol licence has been caught driving five times over the legal limit after swerving into oncoming traffic on a Waikato highway.

Police began receiving reports about 4.50pm yesterday of a car driving erratically along the Waikato Expressway.

Senior Sergeant Chris Painter said the vehicle was intercepted near Puketaha, and the driver was breath tested.

“The driver was more than five times over the legal limit,” he said.

“However, she was also on a zero alcohol licence, meaning she had been forbidden to consume any alcohol before getting behind the wheel.”

The woman’s vehicle was impounded, and she has been summonsed to appear before the Hamilton District Court on February 26 on charges including excess breath alcohol and breaching licence conditions.

“This was a shocking example of someone exercising extremely poor judgment and putting other people’s lives at risk,” Painter said.

“The calls we received described the vehicle swerving across the centre line and into the path of multiple other vehicles.”

Painter said the driver was extremely lucky not to have injured or killed someone.

“We’re grateful to those people who stopped to call 111 and report this to us.

“We encourage anyone who sees dangerous driving like this to please, let us know as soon as possible – it truly does save lives.”
