A woman was killed when she was hit by a car in Hamilton this morning.

Emergency services were called to the suburb of Dinsdale about 7.10am after reports of a pedestrian being hit by a car on Whatawhata Rd, Senior Sergeant Pete Van der Wetering said.

A 64-year-old woman was taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition but later died.

Mr Van der Wetering said the motorist stopped at the scene but police were appealing to other motorists who may have seen what happened to contact them.

"While crash investigators work to establish what has occurred, Police would like to express our sympathies to the women's friends and family for their tragic loss," Inspector Rob Lindsay said.
