One person has died after a vehicle incident on a rural property near Tīrau.

Police said a vehicle rolled on a rural property at Piarere.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 5.15pm yesterday.

Hato Hone St John said it attended with one ambulance and one rapid response unit.

Police said WorkSafe had been advised, and the circumstances of the incident were under investigation.

WorkSafe said it was making initial enquiries to determine the circumstances of the incident.

The death was expected to be referred to the coroner.

Fire and Emergency NZ attended to assist police, a spokesperson said.

“[Fire and Emergency] Crews from Tirau, Putaruru and Rotorua were in attendance, and were on standby to assist.”

Earlier yesterday, a Coromandel grandfather died after an incident involving a commercial mower.

Emergency services were called to the incident on Te Kouma Rd in Te Kouma about midday.

Police said the person died despite the best efforts of staff and the public.

Thames-Coromandel District Council said the victim worked for a council contractor and was a well-known father and grandfather with strong links to the council and local communities.

“Our thoughts are with his whānau during this difficult time.”

The death was referred to WorkSafe and the coroner.

Meanwhile, a serious crash on SH30 near Rotorua left multiple people injured last night, with two needing to be flown to hospital.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash between Matahi Rd and Lake Rotomā about 10pm.

St John said 12 people were assessed at the scene. Police said eight were injured.

One person was flown to Waikato Hospital in critical condition, and another was flown to Tauranga Hospital in serious condition.

Two people in moderate condition were taken to Whakatāne Hospital, and another was taken to Rotorua Hospital with minor injuries.

Police said the road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit made inquiries. It reopened about 2am.
