A convicted child sex offender, with a history of violence, handed himself in to Hamilton police early this morning thanks to media coverage, police say.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Hamilton man Michael Lesley Stevens who has breached strict supervision conditions imposed on his release from prison.

Waikato
Police child protection coordinator Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene said the 26-year-old was convicted for offences including child sex offences in 2004.

He has a history of violence and carrying weapons.

Mr Greene said Stevens is a European of medium build and about 1.8 metres tall.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hamilton Police or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
