A crash has closed a state highway in the Waitomo district.

A police spokesperson said a two-vehicle crash was reported about 11.30am on SH3 at Hangatiki .

“Two people sustained injuries, between moderate to serious and are being seen by ambulance services.

“The road is blocked and there are cordons in place,” the spokesperson said.

“A diversion for traffic is in place around Mangarino Rd.”

The NZ Transport Agency said the road was closed between Te Kumi Station Rd and Mangarino Rd and motorists were asked to follow directions from emergency services.

The detour route takes northbound traffic right onto Te Kumi Station Rd, left onto Hangatiki East Rd, and left onto Mangarino Rd.

Southbound traffic should follow in reverse.
