Witnesses have described the bedlam that erupted after a driver crashed into a Hamilton house before being set upon by angry locals.

Neighbours report the driver being chased and knocked out, while others say someone was smashed in the head with the bottle during the violent melee.

The driver of the car and a person in the house he hit remain in a critical condition in hospital after the incident on Marshall St, Fairfield, about 8.30pm on Thursday.

When asked what happened, a neighbour who watched the drama unfold under the streetlights told the Herald:

“All I know is that this person drove … and side-swiped the moving truck that was there, and went into a neighbouring house and hit a lady. He got out of the car ... he tried to run, and someone followed him.

“I could see a fight breaking out until they moved behind the truck. All I heard was females screaming, ‘Get off him’, so they were obviously pumping …"

The woman who has lived in the street for more than five years says the violent confrontation has left her feeling worried for her safety.

She had a message for the driver.

“You could have killed people, you could have killed a family.”

Another local, who has lived in Marshall St for decades, told the Herald that tensions in the street had been building long before last night’s vigilante action.

“[After the crash] someone caught up with him and KO’d him.”

A lot had been happening on the street recently, including one resident assaulting a police officer, the man said.

Another neighbour told the Herald she arrived home after the incident, but a family member had spoken of violent scenes earlier in the evening.

“[They said] a person smashed another person with a bottle on the head.”

An investigation is under way, police said this morning.

No charges have been laid while officers worked “to establish the circumstances of the incident”.

Police officers could be seen going door-to-door on Marshall St this morning, as they spoke to nearby residents and tried to piece together what happened.
