Footage of a mass brawl in Waikato has spread online, prompting a response from councillors to progress a safety initiative.

In the video posted on social media, a large group of people can be seen throwing punches at one another while people watch on George St in Tuakau.

Police then arrive at the scene, with one officer pulling out what appears to be a Taser and pointing it at the group.

A police spokesperson said that about 12.50pm on Tuesday, February 10, officers attended an incident on George St where a group of people were fighting.

“Upon arrival police have separated the parties and the group of approximately eight have dispersed,” the spokesperson said.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the altercation.”

In a joint statement to the Herald, Waikato District councillors Endine Dixon-Harris, Fabio Rodrigues and Vern Reeve said it would not be appropriate for them to comment on the circumstances of the fight, but incidents like this can unsettle those in the town.

“Tuakau has a strong sense of community,” they said, “with residents and local businesses who care deeply about their town.

“Incidents like this can be unsettling, and we acknowledge the concern they may cause.

“We appreciate the work of the police, who support our communities and respond when situations like this arise.”

The councillors said there were plans to advance surveillance in the town.

“Council is also progressing plans for CCTV coverage in Tuakau town centre as part of ongoing community safety initiatives.

“That work is currently under way.”

Incidents like this do not appear to be a regular occurrence in Tuakau, but eight teenagers were charged with assault after a brawl left an intervening off-duty police officer with critical injuries in 2010.

Up to 30 people were thought to have been involved after John Connolly attempted to break up a fight between two teenage girls near his home.
