Inside the Nikau Sanctuary luxury yurt.
Surrounded by nikau palms and native bush, the aptly named Nikau Sanctuary is accommodation with a difference.
Instead of a typical bed and breakfast, the sanctuary offers Hawaiian-inspired yurt accommodation.
Owners Robbyn and Peter Storey began Nikau four years ago after they moved to their Raglan home, which had a
grove of nikau palms and native bush.
The yurt is built in the grove, but sits above the tree roots to protect the trees, and has a skylight in the roof so couples can gaze at the bush and night sky above them.
Robbyn spent several years in Hawaii, attending a massage school there after living and working as a registered nurse in Hamilton. She now offers Hawaiian massage in her separate yurt, also set among nikau palms.
