Top Waikato cricketer Scott Kuggeleijn denies rape charges

A top Waikato sportsman plans to fight sexual assault charges laid against him in court today.

Northern Districts cricketer Scott Christopher Kuggeleijn, 23, was remanded on bail after entering not guilty pleas to a charge of sexual violation by way of rape on May 17, 2015 and indecent assault between March 2, 2015 and March 6, 2015 after a brief appearance in the Hamilton District Court this afternoon.

There are two alleged victims from two separate incident.

The charges arises out of alleged incidents in Hamilton.

Kuggeleijn has played cricket previously for Wellington but returned to his home town of Hamilton two years ago to play for the Northern Knights.

Kuggeleijn was named both bowler of the year and player of the year at the associations annual awards last year after taking 58 wickets across Twenty20, one-day and Plunket Shield.

Kuggeleijn's father, Chris, is a teacher in Hamilton but also a former Northern Districts cricketer.

Northern Districts Cricket chief executive Peter Roach declined to comment about the charges when contacted this afternoon.

When asked whether the charges would affect his selection in the upcoming cricket season, Mr Roach couldn't confirm, but said the domestic teams would be announced in about three weeks time.

"It's a matter that's before the courts and we won't be providing a running commentary," he said.

Kuggeleijn's lawyer Phil Morgan QC did not seek name suppression for his client.

Kuggeleijn declined to comment when approached by the Herald outside court and was seen walking off down the road by himself.

Kuggeleijn has been bailed to his parents' Tamahere house with a condition not to associate with or contact either of the alleged victims.
