      One person has died after a two-vehicle crash on SH1 near Tirau.

      Emergency services were called about 10.40pm on Thursday, police said this morning.

      State Highway 1 was closed between SH5 and SH28 at Tirau due to a crash.

      “The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.”

      SH1 between SH5 and SH28 was closed overnight.

      The road is now fully cleared and reopened, NZ Transport Agency said around 6.40am.

      A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said four trucks from Tīrau, Putāruru and Rotorua were sent to the crash around 10.38pm.
