Three family members - two women and a man - were killed in a two-car collision on the Waikato Expressway last night.

The driver of the car in which the three people were killed was taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition, a police spokeswoman told the Herald.

Police say the driver of the other car was alone in the vehicle and was also hospitalised with serious injuries.

The crash happened on a slight bend of Mangaharakeke Drive/State Highway 1, between the suburbs of Dinsdale and Nawton, shortly after midnight.

All that remains of the crash at the scene this morning was large amounts of engine fluid and road markings from police serious crash unit investigators.

A portion of bush has also been left crumpled, likely from where one of the vehicles came to rest.

Police said names of those who died would be released once next of kin of those who died had been contacted.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
