Police were alerted to the shooting early on Saturday.

Police were alerted to the shooting early on Saturday.

Three people have been arrested after a man was shot in Te Kauwhata, police say.

The injured man went to Waikato Hospital with a gunshot wound just before 7am on Saturday, said Waikato West Detective Sergeant Rahul Badri.

“It was determined the man had been injured in Te Kauwhata, and police attended the address to make further inquiries.

“At the address, police located and seized a firearm and ammunition, and two women and one man were arrested.”

The women, aged 27 and 59, were charged with two counts of unlawfully possessing a firearm, and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Badri said.

They were due to appear in Huntly District Court today.

The man, 56, was also charged with unlawfully possessing a firearm, and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on March 20.

The arrests were a good outcome for both the alleged victim and the Te Kauwhata community, Badri said.

He praised police staff for their “quick actions”, essential to the arrests.

“Not only am I pleased to be able to hold these offenders to account, I am also happy to have removed a firearm from circulation in the community.

“Police continue to support those affected by the incident and reassure the community that there is no ongoing risk.”
