A homicide investigation is under way after a man was found dead at a house in Te Awamutu.

Police were called to a house on Hazelmere Crescent about 6.15am on Wednesday after reports of an altercation.

They say a 48-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not said whether or not they are looking for anyone in relation to the death.

The house was cordoned off and there was a high police presence at the property and in the area yesterday afternoon as a scene examination got underway.

"The community will notice an increased police presence while we speak to people in the area," a police statement said.

The driveway heading to the house shares a driveway with another property which was damaged in a house fire in October which is now boarded up and unoccupied.

Neighbours spoken to by the Te Awamutu Courier said they saw police at the property of the burnt house taking photos.
