Five men have been charged after an alleged arson at a building believed to be used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Police became aware of the fire on Tauhara Rd, Taupō, about 5.40am on Sunday, which they believe to have been deliberately lit.

“Following initial inquiries, police believe the property was used to manufacture methamphetamine,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Yardley said.

“Police continue to investigate the circumstances around the incident, including conducting a scene examination.”

The Taupō & Tūrangi Herald reported that a building adjacent to Tauhara Bakery and bordering JR’s Landscaping, about 50m from a BP petrol station, was ablaze when emergency services were alerted.

Tauhara Rd between Miro St and Hatton St was closed for about five hours.

Five men, aged 28 to 73, are due to appear in Taupō District Court today, charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and wilfully setting fire to a property and endangering life.
