Chiefs assistant coach Andrew Strawbridge's condition took a small but not unexpected backwards step last night and he remains in a critical but stable condition in Waikato Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

The family realises that both backwards and forwards steps will feature in this process and remain positive about the overall progress Mr Strawbridge has made since he first became ill in Samoa on his way to Samoa on Tuesday

The small step backwards followed some positive developments over the weekend, however he has remained in a critical but stable condition.

This news has been met with great joy by the family and friends of Mr Strawbridge and with a deep appreciation for everyone involved in his care.

His wife, Laura Strawbridge last night said they knew his recovery was "an ultra-marathon and not a sprint".

"We know that Andrew will be in hospital for some time to come but we just don't know how long that will be.

"We are very humbled by the continued support we are receiving and thank the medical staff and everyone for their kindness and support."

The family continues to request privacy as they focus on his recovery.
