A car is engulfed in flames on State Highway 29, near the Kaimai Summit.

A car was engulfed in flames on State Highway 29 near the Kaimai Summit, forcing the driver to pull over.

A video sent to NZME shows flames and smoke billowing from the front of the vehicle, which had pulled over on the side of the road.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Josh Pennefather said the car was on fire on State Highway 29 in the Lower Kaimai.

“We put it out, and now we’re just waiting for a tow truck.”

He said one fire truck was sent, and a water tanker was on its way from Matamata.

An NZTA spokesperson said the fire was extinguished and the car was towed at about 1pm.

“There are no ongoing concerns.”
