State Highway 1 crash near Hampton Downs blocks northbound lanes. Video / NZ Herald

Motorists are being asked to avoid the Waikato Expressway after a car crashed and then caught fire.

Emergency services are currently responding to the single vehicle crash on SH1 near Hampton Downs.

Police said there are no serious injuries, but the fire is blocking northbound lanes.

Motorists are being asked to stay away if they can while crews work at the scene.
