A serious crash in the Hauraki Plains has injured three people and closed State Highway 25 in both directions.

Police and Hato Hone St John said they were alerted to the two-vehicle crash at the Orongo Corner intersection in Hauraki, Waikato, about 2.30pm.

Hato Hone St John sent one ambulance, one first response unit, one manager and one helicopter to respond to the crash.

Paramedics assessed three injured people at the scene, taking one patient in a moderate condition and one patient in a minor condition to Thames Hospital in an ambulance.

The third patient received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police have advised motorists “to avoid the area and expect delays” with State Highway 25 closed in both directions.

According to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), State Highway 25 is shut from Bush Rd to the Kōpū Rd roundabout while emergency services attend the scene.

Diversions have been put in place directing traffic to alternative routes, police said.

The incident comes after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at an intersection of State Highway 6 in Nelson earlier today, leaving them with serious-to-critical injuries, police said.

NZTA said a portion of SH6 would remain closed for several hours this afternoon while police conduct a serious crash investigation.
