Serious crashes in Auckland and Hawke's Bay, pedestrian dead in Waikato

One person has died following a crash on State Highway 1, Tokoroa.

The crash, involving a pedestrian and a car, occurred just before midnight last night.

A second pedestrian initially suffered moderate injuries - but their condition has since worsened and they are now in a critical condition, according to a police spokesperson.

"The road has since been reopened.

"Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are under way."

Emergency services also responded to a serious crash in Auckland overnight.

Meanwhile, today emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 2 in Putorino, Hawke's Bay.

The single-vehicle crash near Haliburton Rd was reported about 10.40am.

"Initial reports indicate there are injuries," a police spokesperson said.

"The road will be closed and traffic management will be in place."

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area if possible.
