Serious Crash Unit investigates Taupō roundabout crash caught on video

Dramatic footage shows a motorcyclist being hit by another vehicle at a Taupō roundabout.

The rider was critically injured in the incident at the intersection of Rifle Range Rd and Taharepa Rd just after 10am on Monday.

Footage from a fixed camera sent to the Rotorua Daily Post and being shared on social media shows the motorcyclist approaching the roundabout and making a right turn.

At the same time, a white ute enters the roundabout and collides with the motorcycle, knocking the rider off.

The rider and bike slide for several metres in front of the braking ute, before coming to a stop.

The ute reverses off the bike and the driver gets out and approaches the rider, who can be seen grabbing at their lower leg.

A police spokesperson on Monday said the road was briefly closed and the Serious Crash Unit was notified.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said one person was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said today that inquiries into the incident continued.
