Serious crash on SH2 near Maramarua Golf Club, highway shut

  • Three people have been injured, two critically, in a crash on State Highway 2 near Mangatāwhiri.
  • The highway is closed in both directions, with diversions and expected delays.
  • The Serious Crash Unit also investigating a second crash in the Waikato and one in Hawke’s Bay.

Three people have been injured - two critically - in a crash that’s closed a holiday highway south of Auckland in both directions late this afternoon.

The crash between a car and a campervan occurred on State Highway 2 near Mangatāwhiri just before 4.30pm, police said.

“State Highway 2 is currently closed in both directions”, police said at 5pm.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred near the Maramarua Golf Club.

“Two people are in a critical condition, with a third person in a serious condition.

Those in critical condition are due to be airlifted to hospital.”

A spokesman said the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter were sent to Maramarua about 4.30pm to assist multiple patients trapped in a car versus campervan accident.

The Auckland helicopter “flew a female patient (age unknown) to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition”.

Diversions would be put in place, but motorists should expect delays, police said.

“Take an alternative route if at all possible.”

The Serious Crash Unit is on the way to the crash scene.

Police investigators are also on the scene of another serious crash at Horsham Downs which has left one person in a critical condition.

.The single-vehicle crash happened shortly before 7:20pm on Bankier Rd.

One occupant of the vehicle is in a critical condition and has been taken to Waikato Hospital, police said.

A second occupant had minor injuries.

Bankier Rd is closed with diversions at Boyd Rd and Horsham Downs Rd while the Serious Crash Unit attends the scene.

Further south, SH2 is also closed south of Hastings.

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash north of Poukawa near the Te Mahanga Rd intersection.

NZTA said the Serious Crash Unit was at the scene.

“Their investigations can take several hours.”

Motorists were urged to delay their journey or consider an alternative route.
