A single-vehicle crash has closed a portion of the state highway near Whatawhata, with police saying there could be “serious to critical” injuries.

Three people were injured in the crash, one seriously.

The affected area of State Highway 23 is now closed.

The crash happened about 9.10am, near the intersection with Ferguson Rd.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two ambulances, one rapid response, and one manager responded to the scene.

Three patients were transferred to Waikato Hospital, one in a serious condition and two in moderate condition.

The highway will be closed while emergency services work at the scene.
