State Highway 3 near Hamilton Airport is closed after a serious crash in which one person has died. Photo / Google Maps

One person has died after a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 3 near Hamilton Airport.

Police were called to the crash near the Narrows Rd intersection about 1.20pm.

One person died at the scene.

Two other people were transported to hospital in critical and serious condition.

The road remains closed, with diversions in place, while the Serious Crash Unit complete a scene examination.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible, and expect delays,” police said.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said they were called out at 1.17pm and sent two fire trucks from Hamilton and Chartwell.

“It was a head-on [collision]. One person was trapped and we used cutting gear to extricate the person. We then assisted police and ambulance.”
