A second person has died in hospital after a crash between a car and truck in Hamilton. Two others remain in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital.

Hato Hone St John sent four ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and an operations manager to the crash, which police said was between Pukete and River Rds.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand sent two pump trucks and a specialist rescue vehicle, with brigades from Te Rapa, Chartwell and Hamilton attending.

The teams were on the scene for about half an hour and extracted one person, a spokesperson said.

Wairere Drive was blocked yesterday while police examined the scene.

A person driving past the crash, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Waikato Herald it was a “very scary scene”.

“There was a vehicle stuck under the left-hand side wheel [of the truck],” they said.

“The whole front of the vehicle was crushed. There were four [people] laying on the ground.”

Inspector Scott Miller said police have extended their condolences to the families of all those involved.

“We would also like to thank the members of the public who came to the aid of those who were injured and assisted at the scene.”
