Just before 10am, an Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew flew to Raglan to assist with the search and rescue of a young male.
The co-ordinated search effort lasted two hours.
He was not believed to be wearing a lifejacket.
Hato Hone St John were notified at 09.46am.
One ambulance and one rapid response unit attended, but were stood down.
The Raglan Volunteer Coastguard also launched a significant search effort.
Extensive parallel searches stretched as far south as Ruapuke Beach, with further shoreline sweeps conducted on the return to base.
“Although the outcome is deeply saddening, all agencies and volunteers involved gave their utmost efforts under difficult circumstances.
“Our thoughts are with the whānau and friends of the individual involved during this difficult time,” Raglan Volunteer Coastguard said.
More than 30 people have died at Papanui Point while fishing, according to the Department of Conservation.
Papanui Point is a notorious spot where past deaths have occurred after people slipped and fell off the rocks, or were hit by unexpected waves.
