The officer in charge of the Te Awamutu-Cambridge sub-area is crediting the quick actions of one of his staff, who prevented the Cambridge Police Station being seriously damaged during a suspicious fire.

Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said the officer was working in the station about 7.15pm when he was alerted by the station's fire alarm.

"Going to investigate, he found a fire outside the station's entrance and on the lawn, which he extinguished with a fire extinguisher."

Police staff interviewed witnesses who gave a detailed description of a vehicle seen leaving the station at the time of the fire.

"A 39-year-old man, found asleep in a Toyota people-mover type vehicle at the Horahora Domain about midnight, will appear in the Hamilton District Court charged with arson."
