So far, Waipa is split down the middle on the issue of Easter Sunday trading.

Consultation has opened on whether the rules should be changed to allow Waipa shops to trade on Easter Sunday.

If the council decides no, the status quo will remain and most Waipa shops will not be allowed to trade on that day.

If the council decides yes, shops will be allowed to trade if they wish to.

Any change would not affect Good Friday, which will remain a non-trading day, or Easter Monday.

Consultation opened last Thursday and will close on Monday, August 14.

Already close to 160 submissions have been received with around 50 per cent of people saying yes and 50 per cent saying no.

Most submissions have come via the council's website at www.waipadc.govt.nz/haveyoursay.

People can provide feedback via council's Facebook page or on printed forms available from council offices and libraries.

A formal hearing, for those who wish to speak directly to elected members, will be held on Tuesday, September 5.

A series of informal drop-in sessions have also been organised to allow people to provide feedback.

Sessions started yesterday morning and the second is on Monday, July 31 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at the Te Awamutu Library.
