Police have made an arrest after a brazen home invasion in Waikato.

A person was sleeping when they awoke to find intruders searching the property shortly before 11pm on Wednesday, Senior Sergeant Craig Bates said.

The burglars then allegedly stole several belongings before leaving in the victim’s vehicle.

Bates said police later stopped the vehicle near Te Awamutu and the driver was arrested without incident.

A 40-year-old man has been charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and will appear in the Hamilton District Court today.

Police urged homeowners to consider options to safeguard their property and belongings from potential burglaries.

Having CCTV, alarms, motion-activated lights and securely locked windows and doors could help your home be less of a target, police said.
