Waikato police hope a pair of shoes might lead them to the identity of two men who stormed a Hamilton pub armed with a firearm and a hammer.

Both offenders were heavily disguised when they entered the Dinsdale Office bar through a rear door on Sunday about 9.15pm.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood earlier told the Herald one of the men was armed with a firearm, the other with a hammer.

They both entered the pub through a back door before confronting and threatening staff.

"The offenders demanded cash, however left the bar without obtaining any money," Henwood said.

Both were described as wearing black hooded jackets and black pants.

One wore brown sneakers and the other wore black sneakers with white soles.

Constable Ben Wise said he hoped releasing imagery of the offenders, including a pair of shoes, could identify those involved.

"We appreciate the images are not great but are asking if anyone knows anything about this to please come forward.

"Pay special attention to a distinctive shoe pictured in the post," he wrote.
