A light plane with engine trouble declared a full emergency coming in to land at Hamilton Airport this afternoon.

The left engine of the Twin Star plane gave a fire warning and the two people on board shut the engine down, the Herald understands.

Police, ambulance and nine fire engines were called to the emergency south of the city just past 4.20pm.

Firefighters at the scene confirmed the plane landed safely at 4.42pm.
