A section of State Highway 1 in Meremere, Waikato, is closed after a two-vehicle crash.

One person is critical after a crash outside the Waikato town of Meremere.

Police said the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Island Block Rd was reported about 7.40pm.

One person has been critically injured.

Part of the road is closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

Hato Hone St John said two ambulances and two rapid response vehicles were sent to the scene about 7.40pm.

“We are transporting one person in a critical condition to Middlemore Hospital.”
