The road between Raglan and Hamilton is blocked tonight after a fatal road crash.

The incident, involving a truck and car, happened on State Highway 23 near Whatawhata, west of Hamilton.

The driver of one vehicle has been killed while the driver of the second vehicle has been transported to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police say an alternative route to consider for traffic moving from Raglan towards Hamilton is traversing Ohautira Rd, via Waingaro and on to Ngaruawahia.

Similarly, westbound traffic heading towards Raglan should consider the same route through Waingaro as an alternative to the Waitetuna Valley Rd.

The Raglan road is expected to be closed until at least 7pm.

Earlier, emergency services attended the scene after one person was trapped in a vehicle.

Northern Fire Communications manager Dallas Ramsay said the crash, a collision between a truck and ute, happened at 3.15pm.

A fire service spokesman said there were two appliances at the scene.

She said a third fire appliance with specialist lighting had been sent to the scene and the road was blocked with diversions in place.

Reports of a serious #crash on #SH23 west of Whatawhata. Follow directions of emergency services. Delays likely. Closure is possible ^TP
