One dead after car crashes into river near Whatawhata in Waikato

One person has died after crashing into a river in Waikato this evening - the second fatal crash in the region today.

In Whatawhata about 5.15pm, emergency services were alerted to a car that had gone into a river near Te Pahu Rd.

Police said after the vehicle was removed, one person was found dead.

The road remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit conducts a scene examination.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to expect delays.

The fatality comes after another person died in an unrelated crash near Hamilton Airport.

The crash, which was near the Narrows Rd intersection, occurred about 1.20pm.

Two other people were transported to hospital in critical and serious condition.
