A person has been badly injured after a car crashed through a fence in the Waikato town of Matamata tonight.

A police spokesperson confirmed emergency services were called to the crash on Waharoa Rd East about 8.10pm.

"One person is reported as trapped and in a critical condition."

St John Ambulance could not be contacted, but tweeted that one person was taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

It was not clear how the person was taken to hospital, but the tweet said a helicopter had been dispatched.
