Head along to see a nerdy plant store assistant feed his ditsy girlfriend to a giant man-eating plant at Riverlea Theatre when Musikmakers tackle Little Shop of Horrors next week.
What started as a 1960 Roger Corman horror comedy before hitting Broadway in 1982, Little Shop of Horrors tells thestory of Seymour Krelborn, who works in a rundown flower shop on Skid Row.
When Seymour comes into possession of an alien plant that feeds on human blood he doesn't realise the plant would end up devouring several people around him, including the love of his life, Audrey, whom the plant is named after.
Musikmakers committee member Jenni Murphy-Scanlon said the committee chose to take on Little Shop of Horrors with the hope the older generation who are familiar with the show would bring the next generation along.
"Little Shop of Horrors is lots of fun and has wide appeal. It gives the cast some different opportunities to play with different characters to what we've done recently. We are trying to mix it up. We are hoping that people in their 30s and 40s who remember the film will bring their kids along," she said.
Ms Murphy-Scanlon said the "contemporary team" behind the show are a young creative bunch and have been well supported throughout this journey.
"Director Melisa Martin, musical director Sam Gordon and choreographer Mike Sorensen are all under 30. Our costume designer is 17. We are really proud and excited about that."
The show runs from August 9 (tomorrow) to August 23. Tickets from www.iticket.co.nz.
