An 8-year-old was able to walk away after being hit by a car in Hamilton.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson said the boy ran out in front of a car at the intersection of Church Rd and Moreland Ave this morning.

However, he picked himself up and walked to Te Rapa Primary School, a few hundred metres away at Ashurst Ave.

Simpson said a staff member took the boy to Waikato Hospital to be checked over.

"He's run into the path of a car and suffered very minor injuries."

Te Rapa Primary School staff said it was a "minor" accident.

Earlier reports that the boy was hit outside the school were incorrect, Simpson said.
