Police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man after two people were seriously injured in an assault in Mātangi on Saturday night.

Police said at the time two people attempted to speak with three occupants of a dark-coloured Ford Falcon doing “noisy burnouts” in the semi-rural area around 8pm.

Police said the trio then got out and assaulted the victims. They suffered serious injuries, requiring hospital treatment.

Inspector Andrea McBeth, Hamilton City area commander, said the 24-year-old man had been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.

Hato Hone St John confirmed two patients were assessed at the scene before being taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.

Anyone who saw the incident or has dashcam footage of Marychurch Rd around 8pm on Saturday is asked to contact police on 105 or online using the “Update Report” function and quoting file number 260301/0526.
