Grant Cowie

Grant Cowie

During the day Hamilton's Grant Cowie is a consultant who applies for funding on behalf of not-for-profits.

Now he's using his passion for food as a fundraiser and opening his home kitchen for cooking demonstrations.

A former professional tennis coach and 2012 MasterChef New Zealand contestant Grant, with wife Judy, will host cooking demos monthly in their home from May to December, donating the profits to Parent to Parent New Zealand.

Parent to Parent connects, informs and supports families of babies, children, teens and adults (under 65) with disabilities.

The first demonstration is May 24 with 'Mediterranean flavours', and participants get the menu, cooking demo, tastings, drinks and recipes.

"I have had a working relationship with Parent to Parent for the past four years and value the positive community outcomes they achieve for children with health impairments and their families," Grant said.

"Cooking demos give me the opportunity to support their good work and also satisfy my passion for food and cooking.

"The demos are aimed at learning new techniques and putting flavoursome menu options together. They are a lot of fun, interactive and also provide the opportunity to meet new food lovers while tasting the evening's dishes."

Parent to Parent spokesperson Sue Pairaudeau said the Cowies opening their kitchen up to 20 people every month was a huge commitment.

"We are extremely grateful for their generosity and support - this is well above the call of duty.

"Grant would know more than anyone how complex and time consuming it is to manage and apply for funds for Parent to Parent's national office and 11 regional offices, and he also sees the reality that donations nationwide are decreasing, while demand for our services increases."

To register email Parent to Parent NZ by Friday, May 20 on izelb@parent2parent.org.nz or phone 0508 236 236. The cost is $60 per person for menu, cooking demo, tastings, recipes and drinks. Limited to 20 places.

Dates and themes for all 2016 demos are at www.parent2parent.org.nz
