Hamilton artist David Lloyd will celebrate his 70th birthday with a retrospective exhibition of his art.

Curated by some Waikato Museum staff, the exhibition features a look over 50 years of David's work.

The former owner of David's Emporium and an ex-primary school teacher, David has always had a prolific involvement in the art world. The exhibition is a comprehensive example of his ability to turn his hand to whatever media he chooses. Ceramics sit alongside photography. Sculptures are housed happily alongside striking paintings. There's even a stark landscape created from slices of bone.

Some of the work is a little bit tongue in cheek, or profound and serious. Each piece has a story behind it, including the pottery in a 'Kimbra series'.

Kimbra, of recent double-Grammy-winning fame, visited David at his home, with her father. David and Kimbra's dad were in the same photography group at the time.

Kimbra saw some David's pottery and he asked her to write a song about the pieces and paid her $100 to do so. Two weeks later she presented David with a CD of the song she wrote and recorded in a studio.

Many of the pieces tell stories about his heritage and the Maori heritage of his "cross-pollinated" grandchildren.

David's gallery, at 78 Lake Crescent, will be open to the public on March 2 and 3, 2-4pm.
