A man wearing a black wig, black-rimmed glasses and dress shirt has robbed a Hamilton bank.

Police are now trying to find the vehicle the man used when making his getaway from the ASB Bank at the Base Shopping Centre this afternoon.

Detective Sergeant Scott Neilson said they were called to the scene at 12.30pm.

The offender, a Caucasian man wearing a white shirt and black pants, has passed the bank teller a note demanding cash.

"A male has entered the store wearing a wig and he has handed a note to the attendant making threats that he had a pistol."

He has been given cash by the attendant and then fled on foot to his vehicle parked nearby.

He left the bank and drove off in a blue Chevrolet Blazer 4WD.

A number of customers and staff were in the bank at the time, he said, however some would have been oblivious as to what was going on.

The incident happened quickly and quietly.

The vehicle was seen being driven towards Mitre 10 Mega but it remains unclear which exit he took and which direction he headed.

Anyone with information is urged to phone Hamilton police on 07 858 6200.
