A man's car has been stolen after he was allegedly threatened with a hammer at a Hamilton petrol station.

Senior Sergeant Simon Cherry said police received a report that a car had been stolen from the petrol station on Norton Rd at about 6pm.

"It was reported to police that a man approached the victim, threatened him with a hammer and proceeded to steal the victim's car," said Cherry.

Cherry said the man was shaken but uninjured.

The man was helping police with their investigation.
