Fairfield College students are set to visit Vietnam and Cambodia next year as part of the World Challenge programme.

Fairfield College students are set to visit Vietnam and Cambodia next year as part of the World Challenge programme.

A group of Fairfield College students is taking on the world and wants to show Hamilton what it's made of in the process.

Twelve students have joined the World Challenge and have begun to fundraise and plan for a month-long trip to Vietnam and Cambodia at the end of next year.

With 18 months to prepare for the trip, they have ample time to raise the $8000 it will cost each student and iron out the finer points of the trip.

The excursion will encompass four aspects and each require plenty of planning. Acclimatisation will see students discover aspects of Vietnamese and Cambodian culture in New Zealand through contact with the people, trying their food and learning some of the language.

Students will prepare for the four to five day trek they'll complete during the trip by participating in treks through mountainous terrain in the Waikato and beyond.

The third part of the trip requires students to contribute to a community project. Last year, a group of Fairfield College students who participated in a World Challenge trip to Thailand and Laos, built additional toilets for a school with a roll of 2000 students and one toilet.

The final part of the trip allows the students to relax, go sightseeing and participate in activities of their choosing.

The challenge gives the students responsibility for planning all aspects of the trip, from money-handling to arranging transport, accommodation and meals.

The Fairfield team held a garage sale this month to help raise money for the trip and has plenty of other ideas under way to boost funds.
