Chiefs co-captain Liam Messam is getting alongside Hamilton youth, encouraging a hard-work ethic.

Messam has been training alongside kids at Ringside gym, as well as being a part of the youth centre at South Pacific Islands Institute (SPI), helping to encourage and advise.

"I've been in the position I'm lucky enough in the role that I do with rugby that kids and other people sort of see me as a role model, so it just fell into place," said Messam.

"I just try and push them to their limits; just get in there and give them heaps of encouragement and sort of be a bigger brother to them, let them know I'm there to help them get through."

SPI aims to provide opportunities for the unemployed, Pacific Island people, Maori and immigrants to overcome obstacles when they are seeking employment or undertaking further training.

"We use boxing and training just as a way for the kids to release some positive energy and get them a goal to work towards," said Messam.

He says the kids at Ringside gym are athletes, and come to him for advice on training, healthy eating and routines. "I'm happy to lend a hand."

Ringside is one of Hamilton's leading boxing facilities.

A positive person, Messam says it's just life that keeps him that way. "There is no point in being angry or negative, that doesn't help anyone."

His message in training, both to the youth and to his team is to work hard. "Anything is possible if you work hard at it. Everyone has a talent but if you don't work hard it's not going to come to fruition.

"I deliver the same message here to the boys at the Chiefs, about working hard. You can get anything you want if you work hard for it."

The Chiefs kick off their Super 15 season tonight at AMI Stadium in Christchurch against the Crusaders. They're hoping they can take out the championship for a third year in a row.
