Christmas is fast approaching and two dates to note in Hamilton are Saturday December 2 for the annual tree lighting in Garden Place and the First Credit Union Christmas Parade on Sunday December 10 along Anglesea Street.

For the first time the public is invited to nominate a child or a family to switch on the lights on the 27m-tall Christmas tree. The Hamilton Christmas Charitable Trust wants help to find a Lighting Luminary to do the honours.

The title was chosen as a luminary is a person who is an inspiration to others, says the trust's event manager Karen Watkins.

"Do you know a child or family who has overcome incredible odds, made significant contribution to the community, or perhaps helped someone in need?" says Karen.

"If so we want to hear from you." Lighting Luminary nomination forms are now available and must be submitted no later than Monday, November 20. Download the nomination form here.

The tree is huge - more than six storeys high. It takes a team of 20 people to install the frame, fluff the branches and hang the baubles.

This year the tree will be even better with some changes to the lighting and music that is timed with lighting changes.

The Christmas Tree will dominate Garden Place and be a great focal point for the community to gather, watch, perform and celebrate the festive season through December and into the New Year.

It will light up for the first time on Saturday December 2 with a special event to mark the beginning of the 2017 festive season in the city.

This year the events start at 5pm with lots of activities for children, food trucks from Gourmet in the Gardens, face painting, balloons, performance.

Come together for a joyful night of community and special guest appearances, and join the count-down together for the big light up by the Lighting Luminary.

The Christmas Parade starts at 3pm on December 10 at the corner of Rostrevor and Anglesea streets with 80 to 90 floats expected.

It travels down Anglesea Street, and ends at the corner of Anglesea and Knox streets.
Pre-parade entertainment starts at 2.15pm.

"This beloved holiday parade features colourful grand floats representing the unique communities of Hamilton," says Karen.

She says there will be a new Queens of Hearts float and look out for a Peppa Pig float.
"Come and join us to see crazy characters, lively marching bands, dance group, ethnic groups, characters, amazing character balloons, and of course Santa Claus."
