Hamilton Wanderers have announced the appointment of Juan Roman as coach of their 2018 men's Northern League Premier team.

Roman will replace Michael Built who left for Auckland after Christmas. The club is currently coached by Ricki Herbert in the summer national league.

Roman moved to the Hamilton club following a stint with Eastern Suburbs in Auckland where he was Director of Football for their junior and youth teams.

He also coached at Forrest Hill-Milford and Auckland United and has been currently coaching the Wanderers side in the National Youth league.

Born in Spain, Roman has coached for nearly two decades, starting as a 16 year old.

He arrived in New Zealand six years ago and is married with young children.

"We all love New Zealand people and the life style. I am lucky to be here doing the type of work that is my passion," Roman said.

Roman has qualifications that include being a UEFA/FIFA Pro License Football Coach, a graduate of Sports Science specialising in High Performance, and is an MBA graduate in Sports Organisation and Facilities.

Roman aims to brings a refreshing approach the club.

"I came to Hamilton Wanderers to support their players to reach the highest level they can. So far I am very impressed with the talented players I have been coaching in the National League Youth squad."

"I have been successful in Spain because I developed a way to combine all the high performance factors — fitness, tactical, technique skills and decision making. I developed this from my background in my bachelor in sport sciences specialising in high performance and also utilised my diploma in football. This gives me a unique perspective, I feel."

Roman is committed to supporting local talent.

"I love football, my teams play football with the same philosophy as Spanish clubs and the national team, building from goalkeeper to backs, keep possession, progress up the pitch and then finishing."

Club spokesman Gurdeep Rana says that with Roman's appointment, Hamilton Wanderers have one of the strongest coaching line-ups in the country.

Roman joins coaches Ricki Herbert, David Douglas, Steven Cox and Kale Herbert who lead the club's senior winter and summer men's and women's teams.

The season commences in April and Roman, with his coaching team, will be on the look out for quality players to improve on last season's finish.
