Waikato police are still hunting a group of thieves who smashed their way into a service station, fleeing with cash and cigarettes.

The quick-thinking, sole staff member managed to run to safety in a back room.

Senior Sergeant Phil Ruddell said the four men were today still being sought by police.

The group used weapons to smash their way into the Mobil Service Station on the corner of Peachgrove Rd and Clyde St about 2.10am yesterday.

As the staff member fled, the men ripped out the till and cigarette cabinet and took off in a green Subaru Forrester.

The Subaru was later found abandoned in Melville with the empty till and cabinet inside.

A second car linked to the robbery was also found abandoned near the high school in Ngaruawahia.
